While enjoying a quiet drink in our favourite bar on Vermont Avenue i was spotted by a rather enthusiastic young gent named Blake who told us he was studying music technology at a school called Icon Collective. He tells me that i am one of his main inspirations and that him and some of the other students had been listening to some of my productions that very day. It was at that point i decided it would be cool to go down to the college and do some kind of Q&A session where i could share some of my experiences and hopefully shed some light on what it was like to work in the industry. This appealed to me as firstly, i like to talk about myself and secondly i rarely get the chance to talk about anything remotely geeky as people generally aren’t interested.
Icon Collective is in a movie studio so we have to negotiate the Gestapo security and then we are in. We meet Christopher who is one of the proprietors on floor 3 who proceeds to show us around the facility- very swanky it is too. There are various areas where the students work and they show me into the main studio where there’s a full camera crew set up to film the whole thing. At this point i realise they mean business!
I go through hair and make up and they sit me in the room facing around 20 students – I start to feel a tad conspicuous at this point and i wonder if this was such a good idea. Once i get going though it all flows perfectly, question after question they throw at me and i answer like i really do know what i’m talking about. I find the whole experience very inspiring, the students are all seriously motivated and genuinely interested in my insights and it really feels great to share my many years of experience. It’s also a great opportunity to give something back and hopefully be able to help these guys get their feet into the murky world of the music industry.
